"Räisänen's strength lies in the dynamic flexibility of her voice and in her ability to express the nuances of music and drama."

-Kaleva-

"Astonishingly naturally Räisänen-Midth played and sang simultaneously, as if having an expressive dialogue between bright and dark sides of her personality. She has similar kind of lyrical and radiantly beautiful tone both in her singing voice and in her violin."

-Helsingin Sanomat-

"Virpi Räisänen-Midth has a reliable, balanced mezzo soprano voice. She is a great discovery for the double role of La Muse and Nicklausse."

VIULAJA

Project Violin - Mezzo

Virpi Räisänen-Midth started in 2005 a project combining her two professional skills: singing and violin playing. In Finnish she calls this project as VIULAJA (violinist = viulisti, singer = laulaja) and in English Project violin-mezzo. She functions herself as a performer of these both instruments, playing and singing simultaneously.

Repertoire for this project she has gathered from already existing pieces written for voice and violin, some of the pieces she has arranged herself. However, VIULAJA-project is foremost an interesting and challenging venue for composers who find it fascinating to combine these two instruments to become one. It allows to create a new sound world based in the performers virtuosic ability of mastering two instruments simultaneously and as equal.

Following composers have been or are at the moment involved in this project:

  • Ilmari Mäenpää, Finland            ' Trasparente ' 2006
  • Jouni Kaipainen, Finland            ' X-citement Op.81' 2007
  • Juha T. Koskinen, Finland
  • Perttu Haapanen, Finland           ' Marlowe's Dreams' 2008
  • Asko Hyvärinen, Finland             ' Cosmic Messenger ' 2007
  • Mark Kirschenmann, USA
  • Jean Vugt The Netherlands         ' The Fly ' 2008
  • Ronald Kool, The Netherlands

Duo palla & pallas

proiectio cum novis innovationibus solisticis

Repertoire of this duo varies from medieval to the most avant garde and includes many different genres. The instrumental combination of Duo palla & pallas is excitngly fresh and it can provide composers interesting ways for expression, this is why several leading contemporary composers have shown their interest in composing for it.
